Overview

A digital mammography machine is a specialized medical imaging system designed to capture high-resolution X-ray images of the breast for the purpose of detecting and diagnosing breast diseases, particularly breast cancer. Unlike traditional film mammography, digital systems store images electronically, allowing for enhanced image manipulation, storage, and sharing.

Main Components

1. Imaging Unit:

• This vertical structure contains the X-ray tube and a flat panel detector
• It has a compression paddle and breast support platform to gently compress the breast tissue for clearer imaging and reduced radiation dose.
• The design allows for multiple imaging angles.

2. Control Console:

• A workstation with a computer, monitor, and control panel.
• The monitor displays the captured images in real time, enabling the radiographer to assess image quality immediately.
• The console also stores patient data and integrates with hospital imaging systems (PACS).

Functionality:

• Digital Image Capture: Converts X-ray signals into digital data for immediate viewing.
• Image Enhancement: Radiologists can adjust brightness, contrast, and magnification to better detect abnormalities.
